COUPLES THERAPY

Couples therapy in London with Citips - Cognitive Behavioural Therapy In London

Couples therapy is a counselling process delivered by a therapist trained in relationship and couples issues that draws on a number of different therapeutic approaches (Please see relevant qualifications/training by clicking this link). Some therapists might use a more classical psychoanalytic approach and some therapists might use the more modern solution focused cognitive behavioural therapy approach. Regardless of the approach used, the advantage of the couples therapy for relationship issues is having a third, trained and unbiased, objective person's opinion and input enabling the clients to meet their goal whatever it might be. This is valuable in that a well-trained therapist is trained to bracket their values and biases aside and focus on the clients' issue presentation which a behaviour cannot be said of our friends and family members who could unwittingly and at times deliberately misadvise us and provide us with a solution based on values and life expectations based on who they are and what they would want in a life.

The clients will have to live with the end result and therefore it is important that the therapist focuses on the clients' unique issues. The couples therapy is not a place in which the therapist would intend to take client's side instead the aim is to help clients arrive at their desired goal.

WHO IS COUPLES THERAPY SUITABLE FOR?

The couples therapy is suitable for relationship counselling, married couples, premarital counselling, couples with anticipatory divorce or divorced couples who would like to resolve their existing issues or acquire peace-restorative techniques in cases of conflicts in order to restore the positive atmosphere at home.

The Couples Therapy is also suitable for those who have been experiencing ongoing issues in a couple that don't seem to be going away. It is suitable for relationship issues in which you might feel chronically stuck, you are not prepared to end and would like to make a fresh start but don't know how or to simply learn to live together in a peace. The couples therapy might also be suitable for people who are going through a dilemma brought on by recent issues such as betrayal, a power-struggle, unfair treatment and those who feel confused and would like an input from a third party that is trained to be unbiased, objective and looking at the couple from a fresh point of view, enabling the clients to better see what the cause of the ongoing struggle might be. The couples therapy is also suitable for people with domestic issues and if necessary couples with high-conflict would be provided with anger management techniques.

HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED?

The shorter the duration of your issue the fewer sessions will be required, the longer the existence of your issues at least twenty four sessions spread across six months should be expected to see some results. It is up to you how many sessions you will book for, but my advice is that you quit once you see consistently over a longer-period of time a consistent positive change in your relationship.

THE EFFICACY AND FAILURE OF COUPLES THERAPY

The majority of clients see some progress as a result of the couples therapy however the couples therapy will fail to work if one or both of the clients fail to present how they exactly feel about their partner and their true intentions about whether they want to be in the relationship or not. The couples therapy will also fail to work if you have unrealistic expectations about the time it should take to change. Generally speaking healthy functioning people have the capacity to change but if it took a few years to acquire the current issues, do not expect miracles of change within a few sessions.

WHEN SHOULD I REFER FOR COUPLES COUNSELLING?

If you have been noticing a negative unwanted pattern in your relationship that does not seem to go away no matter what you do, it might be the right time to acknowledge that sometimes we might need help from a trained unbiased third party to help. The sooner you notice the pattern and decide to seek help the easier it will be to resolve minor disagreements or communication issues. The longer you leave it, and let the issue gradually expand and multiply, affect other areas of your relationship, the more damage might be done that could lead to a growing resentment in secret and then doubt and apathy to want to work through this.
